Greg Oden suffers major knee injury====December 05, 2009, 7:39PM

Greg Oden, one of the few bright spots in what has been a discouraging start to the season,
fractured the patella in his left knee and will likely miss the rest of the season.

But Oden's is the most significant and severe, adding a sad chapter to a career that has been plagued by knee injuries
Oden collapsed to the floor and clutched his left knee, grimacing, with 7:45 remaining in the first quarter after he slid over to provide defensive help on a drive by Rockets point guard Aaron Brooks. It did not appear that Brooks made contact with Oden's left knee, but that Oden's knee simply gave out as he planted and elevated.

It's yet another serious knee injury for the Blazers' young center. Months after the Blazers drafted Oden with No. 1 overall selection in the 2007 NBA draft, his career was delayed because of microfracture surgery on his right knee. He missed the entire 2007-08 season.

Oden returned for 2008-09 but endured an up-and-down rookie season -- he averaged 8.9 points and 7.0 rebounds in 61 games -- as he adjusted to the rigors of the NBA and played through two minor injuries, including one to his left knee. Oden missed 15 games after the All-Star break after he chipped his left kneecap.

But after a dedicated offseason in which he overhauled his body and mind, Oden had finally started to reveal signs of becoming the dominant player he was expected to become. Entering Saturday night, Oden was averaging 15.6 points in his last seven games, the most prolific stretch of his career.

He ranked fourth in the NBA in field-goal percentage (60.5), second in blocked shots (2.40) and had improved in virtually every statistical category since last season. In the Blazers' previous game against Miami, Oden had 13 points and a career-high 20 rebounds. He was averaging 11.7 points and a team-high 8.8 rebounds through 20 games.

Read this about McDyess, Same injury as Oden. Missed an entire year. Has had productive career as back up/role player since this injury. Greg is younger, hopefully will regain all mobility, but everytim your operated on you deal with posibility of scar tissue forming, arthritis, and continued pre-disposition for re-injury. Greg has been my favorite since coming here. Get well soon big guy

All-Star Forward Expected To Miss The Entire 2002-03 Season
McDyess Has Successful Surgery On Fractured Left Patella

NEW YORK, October 16, 2002 – New York Knickerbockers forward Antonio McDyess had successful surgery today to repair a fractured left patella. Team Physician Dr. Norman Scott performed the two hour procedure at Beth Israel Singer Division after a second and third opinion confirmed the original diagnosis. The surgery was without complication, and McDyess will be able to begin rehabilitation following a 4-6 week period when the knee is immobilized in a cast.
He is expected to miss the entire 2002-03 season.
“Although we expect the full rehabilitation process to keep him out the entire season, this is not a career-threatening injury,” Dr. Scott said. “He will be able to walk on crutches and put full weight on it later this week. We expect him to have a full recovery and be 100% by the start of next season.”

The injury occurred during the Knicks’ preseason game versus the Phoenix Suns at Madison Square Garden on Oct. 12 with 1:55 remaining in the game on a put-back dunk. In three preseason games, the 6-9 forward has averaged 17.7 points, 13.0 rebounds and 29.0 minutes.

VS VS VS VS

Let's look at how he stacks up to another famous Bust, Sam Bowie, through three years in the league.
First off they were both picked before superstars. Although Durant isn't quite there yet, he will be before too long. His scoring stats are a thing of legend already.
Oden: 82/246 games played (33 percent), 23 minutes, 11.1 points on 60 percent shooting, 8.5 rebounds, 2.3 blocks, 4 fouls
Bowie: 119/246 games played (48 percent), 29 minutes, 10.8 points on 51 percent shooting, 8.5 rebounds, 2.6 blocks, 3.7 fouls.
It's pretty clear that these guys are very similar players with a very similar history of knee injuries. Bowie was able to eventually play a few successful years, but his growth was stifled by all the time off the court and he never really developed into the player many thought he would be.
One is labeled the biggest busts in sports history. Given their historical similarities and the quality of players picked after them, it's foolish to continue giving Greg Oden the benefit of the doubt.

Portland's Worst Fears Confirmed: Greg Oden Has Microfracture Surgery

Oden Undergoes Microfracture Surgery

An exploratory arthroscopic surgery performed on Greg Oden today revealed cartilage damage to the Portland Trail Blazers rookie’s right knee. Oden is likely to miss the 2007-08 NBA season.

"Greg had an arthroscopy and a micro fracture surgery today," said team physician Dr. Don Roberts, who performed the surgery. "He was found to have articular cartilage damage in his right knee. The area of injury was not large and we were able to treat it with micro fracture, which stimulates the growth of cartilage. There are things about this that are positive for Greg. First of all he is young. The area where the damage was is small and the rest of his knee looked normal. All those are good signs for a complete recovery from micro fracture surgery."

Oden is expected to be on crutches for up to eight weeks. Recovery time from micro fracture surgery varies from person to person, but generally takes between six and 12 months for full recovery.

"Certainly this is a setback, but our future is still incredibly bright," said Trail Blazers General Manager Kevin Pritchard. "Is it disappointing? Yes. However, this is a great core of talent and players of strong character and will continue to be."

Oden, the #1 pick in June’s NBA Draft, averaged 15.7 points and 9.6 rebounds for Ohio State last season, leading the Buckeyes to the NCAA national championship game as a freshman.

"We know this discouraging news for all of our fans, however, the people of Portland are very enthusiastic and compassionate about their Trail Blazers and I know they will stand behind Greg and the team during his recovery," said Trail Blazers President Larry Miller. "We believe our fans and sponsors are going to continue to support us because they know we’re headed in the right direction."

Has Microfracture Surgery
The nightmare scenario involving the ghosts of Bill Walton and Sam Bowie has indeed happened: Greg Oden's exploratory knee surgery revealed further damage that required him to have microfracture surgery. Based on the recovery and rehabilitation time that is typically involved with this procedure, Oden will likely miss the entire 2007-08 season.............................

Live-Journal No More! [12 Dec 2009|12:20pm]

pirateguy

That pretty much sums it up.

As fresh faced teenager, joining in early on the blogging game, before people even knew what to call it really, I had a diary land account and in which it contained the foolish rantings of a younger self almost unbearable to read.

Then came the lovely move here, to Live Journal. I have been here many years, and in such I have watched my writing styles completely change, from a detailed account of my life, to something of more just pondering of life itself, to things of this world that are just to awesome not to share, and now it is a good mix of both.

But now it is time for another change, it is time to embrace a new format. As of tomorrow, www.epiczach.com will be home of my new blog with Tumblr

See you all there.
